Abstract
The National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) is a key component of the U.S. Department of Energy’s strategy in promoting the United States’ economic, environmental, and energy security through reliable, clean, and affordable power production from coal. The NCCC was established in 2009 to build on the experience, expertise, and infrastructure in place at the Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF), an existing facility which has been in operation since 1996.
By offering a world-class neutral test facility and a highly specialized staff to Technology Developers, the NCCC accelerates the commercialization of advanced carbon capture technologies to enable coal-based power plants reduce CO2 emissions cost-effectively. In undertaking its mission, the NCCC is involved in a range of activities to develop the most promising technologies for future commercial deployment. Research at the NCCC includes development of technologies for post-combustion CO2 capture for incorporation into pulverized coal power plants, pre-combustion CO2 capture for integration into the new generation of coal gasification power plants, gasification development and oxy-combustion studies.
