Abstract

As the state-of-the-art technology in power electronics, variable-frequency drive (VFD) has revolutionized electronic applications by providing continuous control and matching the motor speed to specific demands, and hence reducing energy consumption and the costs of equipment maintenance in industrial processes. As the requirement from large unit drive power and compact design, both heat generation and heat density from power devices, such as IGBT, rectifier, etc., increase significantly. Accordingly, VFD cooling system is being challenged in reliability, versatility and ease of use. This presentation will introduce general thermal issues from the development of large drives.

Speaker

Dr. Jiahui Zhang received the Ph.D. degree in Thermal Engineering from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 1999. From 2006, he has been a R&D Engineer with Siemens Industry Inc., R&D Department, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, leading cooling system development for large variable-frequency drives and related control system. He worked at Tianjin University, engaged in research projects regarding HVAC and refrigeration system. In 2001, he joined University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, as a Postdoctoral Fellow and then Research Associate, to conduct the study on electrical transformer cooling.

Dr. Zhang is a senior member of the IEEE and member of ASME. His expertise is in Cooling of Power Electronics, Power Packaging, Thermal Management, Thermal/Hydraulic Analysis, and HVAC/Refrigeration.
